News Release: SALA Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Sibling owners Tony Balistreri and Teresa Balistreri Warsh will thank dining guests with food & beverage specials, and gift drawings from October 5th through October 16th.
MILWAUKEE – September 15, 2021
On October 2, 2001 a new restaurant opened on Hampshire Avenue. Sala da Pranzo opened its doors to a community in a time of turmoil when people were acutely aware of their need for one another, for places to gather, for something to unite them.
In Italian, the original name of the restaurant, Sala da Pranzo means “the dining room.” Driven by a desire to share a love of food, the Balistreri siblings Teresa and Tony opened their “dining room” to all. Serving recipes they learned from their great-grandmother Lena D’Amico, they took the tradition of the Sicilian family dinner beyond the family. The new establishment on the East Side became an extension of their home.
Twenty years later, in the almost-aftermath of a worldwide pandemic, the doors to their dining room are still welcoming guests and uniting the Milwaukee community around a love of delicious fresh food, cooked with love, served with care – gathering in good times and bad.
As all beloved friends do, Sala da Pranzo came to be known by its nickname, so today’s guests enter the threshold of SALA under a red sign with a shorter, but just as recognizable name. However, the long open doors are a testimony to the dedication of the family who runs it and to the community that cherishes it as a local treasure. Teresa Warsh shares “Being independently owned enables us to provide a unique, comfortable environment reminiscent of a classic Italian restaurant one might find in New York City right here in our own neighborhood. We love to get to know our neighbors and customers and enjoy developing a relationship with them.”
SALA is not just a restaurant but also a hub of activity, a gathering place for monumental celebrations and ordinary Tuesday evening outings. SALA is a home away from home for many.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary SALA looks a bit different. Change has been constant. The owners built a bar, remodeled the kitchen, welcomed another brother Peter as a chef upon his return from culinary school at the CIA in Napa Valley, added more outdoor seating, offered hundreds of new specials, and adjusted in and out of pandemic protocols. Nevertheless, one thing has remained the same for the last twenty years: the dining room is open for all to come. This is the essence of community.
The entire staff of SALA wishes to thank the many beloved customers who have become like family for allowing them to play a role in the thriving culture of Milwaukee’s East Side. Please come celebrate with us this month as we take time to enjoy food, friends who become like family, and the beauty of a dining room full of conversation and love.
During the two weeks of celebration dining guests will be entered into a drawing for three gift baskets full of goodies and offered $20 dinner Specials & a cocktail Special along with many 20th themed gift certificates. It will be two weeks of celebration.
